Blackdrawn – Debut Album

BLACKDRAWN from Thessaloniki, after a series of live shows, have released their full-length debut album. This review comes with a slight delay as it is a release of 2015 (my apologies to the band).The album kicks in with the industrial intro of “Vantablack”, followed by the first track of the album “Breathin’” blasting away the melodeath way, including a really nice chorus, that really shows what their vocalist is capable of. What we notice from the first notes of the album, is that the production is well balanced, with room for both guitars and keyboards to shine. Up next we witness some djent-influenced riffage on “Sound Of Bleeding”, another fast-paced song leading us to a really nice chorus. “Blackdrawn Skies” has more of a mid-tempo gothic touch to it, bringing more groove to the bands’ sound and some really good solos.

The mid-tempo continues with “Deathmask”, in a groovy song that brings Arch Enemy to mind. Speaking of catchy, here comes the catchy chorus of “Hearts Turning Black” being one of the most hit-oriented songs of the albums. “Embracing Darkness” brings back the blasting, as well as the sinister groovy riffs, In a song where the bass becomes more audible in the mid-section.“What I Am” brings back the Swedish melody we all know, bringing us another potential hit song with a great chorus some more killer soloing, and lots of industrial influences. The acoustic intro of “Scavengers” turns into another catchy mid-tempo melodeath tune, with a groovy break before the chorus, and those killer solos!

“Undiminished” follows aggressively, blasting once more, followed by another chorus that’s meant to stick in your head, a more aggressive one this time. “Eradication Theme” and “1000 Miles Below” come up next. The first is one follows a catchy motif like some songs before it, the second ends the album with a blast, and some of the finest melodies on the album, one of my personal favorites of the album.

A really well-worked modern metal record worth listening to, with strong melodies. The duration (12 songs, 54 minutes) shouldn’t discourage you, it flows smoothly.

Οι Blackdrawn είναι ένα Melodic Metal συγκρότημα, που σχηματίστηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη τον Οκτώβριο του 2012 από τον κιθαρίστα J. Demian, τον μπασίσταGeorge Kanztios, και τον drummer Michael Karamichalis. Με την προσθήκη του Giannis Patoukas στα πλήκτρα, του Nikos Voultsidis στην κιθάρα, και τουDimitris “Dra” Traskas στα φωνητικά, ολοκληρώθηκε το σχήμα και ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι στους rock προορισμούς. Το περασμένο καλοκαίρι κυκλοφόρησαν το ντεμπούτο και ομώνυμο άλμπουμ τους, ενώ την προηγούμενη Κυριακή (7/2) συμμετείχαν στον τελικό του Global Battle of the Bands στην Αθήνα. Ας ακούσουμε όμως τη δουλειά τους.

Ο δίσκος ξεκινάει με ένα ορχηστικό κομμάτι, το “Vantablack“, το οποίο δημιουργεί ένα ατμοσφαιρικό κλίμα σε συνδυασμό με εφέ και κιθάρες, ζεσταίνοντας το έδαφος για το “Breathin‘”, το οποίο μας υποδέχεται άκρως επιθετικά. Διπλή μπότα στα τύμπανα, γρήγορος ρυθμός, είναι σαν να ακούγεται κάτι διακεκομμένα. Το ρεφρέν είναι αρκετά καλό. Συναντάμε brutal φωνητικά, ωραία σημεία για χτύπημα (στην κυριολεξία), πολύ γρήγορα παιξίματα στο κομμάτι από τις κιθάρες, που σε οδηγούν στην τρέλα.

Περνάμε στο “Sound of Bleeding“, το οποίο ξεκινάει με κοφτό ωραίο ρυθμό και συνεχίζει σε γρήγορες καταστάσεις. Το κουπλέ δίνει πολλά γκάζια και φορτώνει για το ρεφρέν, το οποίο δίνει πόνο (σόρυ κιόλας). Διπλή μπότα στο background και ωραία ακόρντα από τις κιθάρες, ενώ η φωνή το απογειώνει για να γουστάρεις! Αρκετά καλά και… δυνατά μέχρι στιγμής.

Συνεχίζουμε στο νούμερο 4, το “Blackdrawn Skies“, στο οποίο συμμετέχει ο μπασίστας Petros Chisto του πρώτου (ίσως) melodic metal συγκροτήματος, των Firewind! Ξεκινάει με υπέροχη κιθάρα και πολύ ωραία πλήκτρα, όμορφος ήχος. Αμέσως τα brutal vocals αλλάζουν το πνεύμα. Το ρεφρέν είναι ίσως το καλύτερο του άλμπουμ (μέχρι στιγμής) με την κιθάρα να μαγεύει από πίσω κατά την άποψή μου. Μια γέφυρα η οποία έχει δυνατά σημεία και οδηγούν σε ένα πολύ καλό σολάρισμα! The ultimate madness! Oh yeah! Ένα λεπτό πριν το τέλος πέφτει λίγο ο ρυθμός από το απόλυτο χτύπημα και έχουμε πάλι το ρεφρέν. Πολύ δυνατό κομμάτι (όνομα και πράμα), μου άρεσε αρκετά.

Προχωράμε όλο και πιο βαθιά στο άλμπουμ, φοράμε την μάσκα του θανάτου “Deathmask” και τρελαινόμαστε από τα γρήγορα ριφ στην κιθάρα και τον επιθετικό ρυθμό. Μελωδικό ρεφρέν, σου δίνει κάτι που γουστάρεις αρκετά… έχει πολλή ψυχή αυτό το κομμάτι και ενέργεια. That’s good! Στο 02:40 πολύ καλό σημείο για headbanging! Absolutely! Σόλο που βγάζει πολύ συναίσθημα και αγριάδα ταυτόχρονα. Δυνατό κλείσιμο στο τραγούδι, μου άρεσε και αυτό αρκετά, αξιοσημείωτα τα φωνητικά, ήταν πολύ δυνατά! Μέχρι στιγμής αφήνει πολύ καλές εντυπώσεις το άλμπουμ.

Next one: “Hearts Turning Back“, που μας υποδέχεται πολύ δυνατά και με ωραίες κιθάρες, ένα background το οποίο ακούγεται συχνά στο κομμάτι και στο ρεφρέν ειδικά. Αλλαγές στο ρυθμό, όμορφο σόλο με διπλές κιθάρες. Επικρατεί μια μουσική-κιθαριστική τρέλα για λίγο, και ακολουθεί το ρεφρέν. Στο κλείσιμο ακούγεται η φράση των πλήκτρων που επικρατεί στο κομμάτι, αρκετά καλό και αυτό.

Πάμε τώρα να αγκαλιάσουμε το σκοτάδι: “Embracing Darkness“, το οποίο αρχίζει με την φράση των πλήκτρων που τελείωσε το άλλο τραγούδι και μπαίνει άκρως δυνατά και σε τρελαίνει! Υπέροχος ρυθμός και σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα σε περιτριγυρίζει. Οι κιθάρες συνεχίζουν να δίνουν ρέστα, καθώς τα parts τους είναι αυτά που σου προσφέρουν μαγεία! Ρεφρέν και ζωντάνια, με τα φωνητικά να το απογειώνουν, κλείνει το κομμάτι. Nice one!

Περνάμε στο “What I Am“, το όγδοο σε σειρά κομμάτι στον δίσκο. Πάνω κάτω ίδιο τραγούδι, απλώς έχει αρκετές αλλαγές στο ρυθμό, και το ρεφρέν είναι αρκετά καλό. Στο 02:20 ο ρυθμός αλλάζει αρκετά και οδηγεί σε σόλο. Έχουμε και ένα όμορφο ακουστικό διάλειμμα στο 04:20, και επανερχόμαστε δυνατά στο ρεφρέν για το κλείσιμο. Πλούσιο κομμάτι – πραγματικά αυτό το επίθετο το χαρακτηρίζει απόλυτα.

Next stop: “Scavengers“, με acoustic intro arpeggio και μελωδία. Η συνέχειά του είναι αναμενόμενη, καθώς συνεχίζει σε ηλεκτρικό ήχο (αρκετά καλό θα έλεγα), δυνατά σημεία, γρήγορα παιξίματα με πολλή ενέργεια. Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ το ρεφρέν – κάτι σου αφήνει. “Undiminished” το επόμενο, με ατμοσφαιρικό εφέ στην έναρξή του και ΜΠΑΜ με όμορφη φράση στα πλήκτρα. Από ’κεί και πέρα επικρατεί το χάος. Τρελός ρυθμός, τρελές εντάσεις! Ξεχωρίζει ελαφρώς από τα προηγούμενα κομμάτια. Έχει ενδιαφέρον ο ήχος του και τα παιχνίδια που κάνουν οι κιθάρες. Η γέφυρα πριν το σόλο είναι όλα τα λεφτά, με τις κιθάρες και τα ντραμς να δίνουν ρέστα, και όλο αυτό σε αποτελειώνει στο σόλο που ακολουθεί. Απόλυτα τρελό τραγούδι!

Προτελευταίο στο δίσκο, το “Eradication Theme“: είναι σαν συνέχεια του προηγούμενου, απλά πέφτει ο ρυθμός και η ένταση. Έχει δυνατά κοφτά σημεία αλλά από ’κεί και πέρα όχι κάτι ιδιαίτερο. Τελειώνοντας, το “1000 Miles Below“, με drums intro και αρκετά ενδιαφέρον ριφάκι στην κιθάρα, σαν να σε ξυπνάει λίγο. Στο ρεφρέν είναι σαν ερωταπαντήσεις. Πολύ καλά φωνητικά! Γενικά είναι ένας όμορφος τρόπος για να κλείσει το άλμπουμ… αρκετά δυνατό!

Το ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ των Blackdrawn είναι στο σύνολό του ένα ταχύτατο και γεμάτο ενέργεια άλμπουμ. Ξεχωρίζουν πολύ τα κιθαριστικά μέρη του, καθώς οι κιθάρες δίνουν μια άλλη νότα στη μονοτονία που υπάρχει. Είναι ένα αρκετά καλό άλμπουμ, όμως από ένα σημείο και μετά σε κουράζει η ομοιότητα των κομματιών. Πιστεύω πως οι δυνατότητες που έχουν είναι περισσότερες και πως στην επόμενη τους δουλειά θα υπάρχουν πιο πλούσιες δημιουργίες. Πάντως, η πρώτη τους δουλειά είναι αρκετά καλή και σε αρκετά υψηλό επίπεδο, καθώς δεν χρειάζεται καν να αναφέρουμε την τελειότητα στα παιξίματα και στα φωνητικά μέρη. Αξιοσημείωτη είναι και η συμμετοχή ενός πραγματικά δυνατού μπασίστα, του Petros Christo – και το ότι συμμετείχε, λέει πολλά από μόνο του.

Εύχομαι ολόψυχα καλή συνέχεια στα παιδιά και αναμένουμε την επόμενη δισκογραφική τους κίνηση με ενδιαφέρον.

Πάντα με εκτίμηση και σεβασμό

Το σχήμα Blackdrawn απο τη Θεσσαλονικη επέστρεψε με το ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο του! Χρησιμοποιώ την λέξη “επέστρεψε” καθώς τα μελη που απαρτίζουν το συγκρότημα έχουν λάβει το “βάπτισμα του πυρος” απο προηγούμενες συμμετοχές τους σε μπάντες όπως οι  Less Than Human, Hail Spirit Noir, Out Of The Lair κ.α.

Το νεο αυτο συγκρότημα εχει ηδη μια σεβαστή συναυλιακή εμπειρία καθώς εχει ανοίξει συναυλίες για τους μεγάλους Septic Flesh και Arch Enemy ενώ σίγουρα θα το δούμε ακόμα πιο ενεργό στο μέλλον.

Το ντεμπουτο τους σίγουρα διαπιστωνουμε πως ειναι καλόδουλεμένο με ενα υπέροχο και επιβλητικό artwork , μια έμπνευση του Gustavo Sazes ο οποίος είναι γνωστός για τις δουλείες του με  Arch Enemy, Kamelot κ.α. Το artwork δίνει μια σκοτεινή μυστήρια πινελιά που όλοι θα λατρέψουν.

Η μουσική τους μπορεί να χαρακτηριστει ως modern metal. Οι επιρροές τους από τα Σκανδιναβικά metal έθνη είναι δεδομένη χωρίς να λείπει η πολύ αγαπημένη Αμερικάνικη δύναμη! Πιστεύω μπάντες όπως οι Soilwork , In Flames , Arch Enemy , Killswitch Engage τους επηρέασαν. Σε αυτό το σημείο δεν μπορώ να μην αναφέρω πως το εξώφυλλο δείχνει επιρροή από Dark Tranquillity.

Το συγκρότημα ευτυχώς καταφέρνει να χρησιμοποιησει τις επιρροές του και τις ιδέες του σοφά , χωρίς δηλαδή να δημιουργήσει κάποια ”κόπια”.

Τα κομμάτια είναι πολύ καλά δουλεμένα και δημιουργούν το απαραίτητο κλίμα. Επιθετικά riffs , drumming ΑΡΙΣΤΟ πράγμα που θα ζήλευαν πολλοί και φωνητικά που εναλλασσονται μεταξύ growls και καθαρών δημιουργούν μια must – headbang ατμόσφαιρα! Μην ξεχάσω να αναφέρω πως τα solos θα ολοκληρώσουν την ακουστική μας εμπειρία καθώς σε όλα τα κομμάτια υπάρχει και ένα όμορφο ”παιγνίδι” των κιθαρων.

Τα πλήκτρα χρησιμοποιουνται πραγματικά στους κατάλληλους χρόνους ώστε να προσθέσουν μια μικρή δόση ηλεκτρονικής ατμόσφαιρας και μια γεύση “metal modernιλας” (αν μου επιτρέπεται να χρησιμοποιησω έναν τέτοιο όρο).

Το αλμπουμ περιέχει 12 κομμάτια γεμάτα ένταση και headbanging. Απόλαυσα κάθε λεπτό ακρόασης και σίγουρα “φεύγει” απο το περιοδικό μας με τις καλύτερες συστάσεις και ευχές για επιτυχία!

Να ομολογήσω πως δεν εχω ακούσει ακόμα το συγκρότημα on stage όμως μετα το άκουσμα του εν λογω δίσκου σίγουρα θα το επιδιώξω!

So, after two and a half year, Blackdrawn has released (09.06.2015) their debut album which is titled “Blackdrawn” (self-titled), it is not a big deal to see an album being named after it’s band name and in a way it makes sense because it is their debut album. For those who don’t know, they are a Melodic Death Metal band from Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia – Greece. They are a crowd of six, Dimitris Traskas (vocals), J.Demian (guitars), Nick Voultsidis (guitars), John Patoukas (keys), George Kantzios (bass) and Michael Karamichalis (drums). The album is a spectacular piece of work consisting of 12 tracks, one of them is an instrumental. You can also get your hands on their 12 pages booklet featuring Petro Christo (Firewind) and artwork by Gustavo Sazes when you get the limited edition “Digipack” and I think the album art is amazing!

Facts aside, focusing on the musical aspects of the album, it starts off with an amazing instrumental “Vantablack ” which is undoubtedly, in my opinion, the perfect track to start the album and I got addicted to its burning melancholic nature from the minute I started listening to it. Track number two “Breathin’” kicks off with racing drum beats and Dimitris shows off his vocal skills by changing his vocal growl tones according to the depth of the lyrics. Moving on to the third track “Sound of Bleeding” is a fast-paced, guitar-driven piece of work which demonstrates its aggressive nature driven by tribal like drum beats, the bass is very audible and holds strong string presence. The growl syncs well with the instrumentals, Michael Karamichalis is one hell of a drummer in my opinion and the guitar, bass and drum work are absolutely awesome in this track. I’d listen to this just for the drum work. Firing up the fourth track in the album “Blackdrawn Skies” starts with a strong rhythm, and as the vocalist takes over the track it flows with catchy guitar riffs throughout while the musicians unleash all the violence they have inside them. I loved the keys accompanied by the touch of bass guitar strings, especially near the end of the track. This is my second favorite track from the album

Fifth track, “Deathmask” is a killer soundtrack for a cold blooded serial killer who goes berserk, lightning-fast fills and adroit bass controls the track, the guitar riffs and the killer drums towards the end of the track is brilliant. The vocals are point blank range style, they are really good in my opinion. Taking the sixth position on the album “Hearts Turning Black” starts with badass drum beats along with the heavy death metal riffing and keeps the intensity flowing till the end. Even though this track is an intense yet slow paced mixture, it has a melodic part to it, where it provides a great contrast to the other instrumental’s presence. This song has “Turn an angel into a demon” kind of feel to it. I enjoyed it very much. “Embracing Darkness” is such an awesome name for a title, positioned seventh in the album. The opening part gave a similar melody like that of the previous track, it involves fast paced vicious vocals, strong drums, penetrating guitar riffs.

Track number eight “What I Am” has a similar shower of guitar riffs like in the previous track, it possesses such clean guitar breaks while firing the machine gun like drum beats. This track has a lot of variations going on, the music switches into various pace with unique elements of instrumentals sprinkled all over. I can’t stress enough how important this sort of variation is for any band and I loved the back ground chorus accompanied machine gun drum beats and the well maintained throaty vocals. Track number nine “Scavengers” made me get into a head-bang routine, every time I came across this track I felt like a head banging freak and the lyrics got stuck on my head too. Track number ten “Undiminished” has a cool melodic opening and full of excellently executed riffs and fantastic vocal work. The drummer is freaking awesome on this track, if you are into sick death metal drum beats then you should totally check out this track. “Eradication Theme” was controlling my body, there is absolutely nothing more to say but this the only word: perfect. You will realize how good these guys are after listening to this track, it emulated a chaotic atmosphere while I was listening. It is definitely one of the best tracks on here. The last track from the album “1000 Miles Below” is one of the most intense they have ever written, and also maybe one of the most technical and hard to play and it is used as a vehicle to show their skill.
In the end, I’m not saying they are perfect but this being the band‘s debut album, the good easily outweighs the few, tiny flaws that you can find with the album. Vocalist Dimitris Traskas does a great job throughout the whole album and his voice doesn’t strain nor do the screams feel forced. The growls have the obvious death metal tone to them, and the cleaner vocals has a nu-metal sound to it and Hats off to Michael Karamichalis, who is a real drum champion. For any melodic death metal fan this album can never be disappointing. Nonetheless, this is great, even the front cover is beautiful… Give it a chance folks!
